Following the funeral she had fallen into the habit of drafting eulogies for her friends and family. Granted it was an odd exercise but one that she couldn’t easily break. Mindful of the law of three, she glanced at one friend over coffee and thought Warm, Generous, Personable. Another good buddy was for sure Devoted, Great Sense of Humor (which counted as one trait) Community Minded. Three traits, a way to name and capture the full complexity of another person, felt neither reductive nor dishonest. And for the first time she understood that rush of simply being alive. The challenge of course was keeping her overworked ego at bay. Wondering what will they say about me? Probably, defying the law of three they’ll say, gone. And that will be the truth as well.
