Signs of Life


Teaching third grade is not the life Tom has envisioned for himself. He loves the outdoors. The summer he spent hacking through the primeval forest to forge the southern edge of the Appalachian trail was the happiest he had ever been. Now, like his bored and sullen students, he stares out the window in between moments and watches for signs of life lurking under the gray and the cold.
